How to write a seductive headline

And leave your reader wanting more…

What’s the first thing you see when you look at most webpages, blogs, newsletters or printed ads? If you answered a headline, you’re correct. But in today’s visual world, I’d also accept a photo/graphic as a correct answer, as they often go hand in hand. But let’s focus on the headline…

The headline is actually the hardest thing to write. Did you know it takes me around 60% of my time to write a headline? The other 40% of copywriting flows out of my brain in no time (it’s that copywriting technique I told you about).

Your headline is super important. You not only have to capture attention, but you have to answer, ‘So what?’ and ‘What’s in it for me’ – the 2 crucial questions for all copywriting pieces.

You want to intrigue your reader and make them lose focus on everything else. You need to seduce them! I’d love to call myself a seductive little minx but I don’t think I’d attract the right clients.

Here are some examples of headline templates I love and use:

  • How to, How would, or How much
  • Little known ways to, or Secrets of
  • What you should know about
  • Discover how to
  • Are you ready for
  • Money-saving, time-saving or no-risk
  • Take advantage of

These headline formulas have been tried and tested and proven to work. Some people will say, ‘Blah, these are way too salesy’, but let me assure you, they work to create a response. Try it.

One of my biggest tips is to make sure the rest of your headline resonates with your target market. Finish off the headline templates by offering your target market something they really want or need.

Here are some examples targeting a VA:

  • How much money can a VA really earn?
  • Little known ways to build your VA business quickly
  • What you should know about running a VA business
  • Discover how to replace your corporate income as a VA
  • Are you really ready to become a VA?
  • Time-saving tips to quickly writing copy for your VA website
  • Take advantage of VA mentoring with this great deal

Of course you then go on with a sub-headline that adds a little something more to your story.
