Maybe I’m strange, but I don’t do goals…

One of the words I’m beginning to hate in business is ‘goals’. Everyone is always on about goals. You’ve got to have set your goals, you have to meet your goals, you have to exceed your goals. Goals, goals, goals…

And there’s not just yearly goals, but now people encourage you to make weekly goals, financial goals, and even social media goals.

It honestly drives me nuts.

Every time I hear someone say, ‘What are your goals’, I tune out.

It’s become another over-used business word.

What is the real purpose of setting goals?

We all know the answer to this is to have something to measure your success on.

For example, you set a goal to earn $2000 a month and then if you achieve this, ‘Yay! You’ve achieved your goal’.

Then you’d set a new goal to push yourself further the following month and aim to earn $3000. And the cycle of continual goal setting continues.

So why am I so anti-goals?

Because my fear of failure outweighs my goal achieving high.

If I say I’m going to do something, and then can’t achieve it, I get mad at myself. It doesn’t work with me to encourage me to try harder and push harder to achieve my goal. Instead, it makes me think why bother? It’s just how I’m wired.

Sure, there are things I want to do, and I’ll push myself so hard to get there. And like everyone else, I am quite proud when I get there. But I do it at my own pace, in my own time, and under no pressure to achieve it by a certain time.

So what do I call ‘goals’?

Here’s a quick list of other terms we could all use to avoid ‘goals’ becoming just another over-used word:

  • Desires
  • Outcomes
  • Results
  • Dreams
  • Aims

So if you’re like me and sick of constantly being asked about your goals, stay strong, stand up and say, I have desired outcomes, not goals!

Agree or disagree?
